The Shipwright

I’m redefining the term “shipwright” and bringing it back! I’m the first modern shipwright! My full name is Kyle Nicholas Satterfield, I go by Nick.

After 2 decades working in the boat/yacht maintenance and repair industry I felt lost. I acquired a wealth of knowledge and experience about repairing, restoring, and maintaining fiberglass and wooden watercraft, but didn’t know what to call myself or how to define my profession. There’s no term to describe someone who is an expert on marine construction, maintenance, and repair.

Popular definitions of terms I considered:

Shipwright: “A carpenter skilled in ship construction and repair.”

Boatman: “a man who works on, deals in, or operates boats.”

Boat Guy: “When a guy you are dating shows great interest in you until he suddenly ghosts you to reunite with his ex.”

Fiberglass Guy: “Electrical part installed anywhere along the guy wire to help protect against stray current that may be on the guy caused by lightning strikes or other sources.”

Boatwright: “A craftsman who builds wooden boats.”

Fiberglass Repair Technician: “Someone whom laminates and repairs fiberglass.”

Well, I am a skilled carpenter, I’ve worked in ship construction and repair, I like how it sounds; it sounds better than “Nick’s Boat Work”: my first boat business blog.
