Awlgrip Paint Repairs
It’s Science and Art!
Performing a high quality paint repair is a multi stage process that involves:
Fiberglass Repair: Paints are thin coatings. If the paint is damaged, the underlying fiberglass is usually damaged as well. First, the underlying fiberglass must be repaired.
Fairing: After the fiberglass is repaired, multiple coats of fairing compound are applied, cured, and sanded, to reproduce the original contour of the structure.
Primer: All paints require a primer to bond well with the substrate.
Topcoat: The topcoat is applied over primer. Most boat paints consist of a 1 part topcoat. Some require a basecoat application followed by a clearcoat application.
Blending: Lastly, the paint is wet sanded and buffed to blend in with the existing paint.
Cosmetic Results
The paint repair will only look as good as the existing paint it is applied to. New paint looks different than aged paint. The first slideshow shows Imron repairs performed over well cured Imron paint that is only a few years old. The paint is a perfect match and the repairs are not noticable. The second slideshow shows Awlgrip repairs over Awlgrip that is 20 years old. The new paint looks different than the aged paint. New paint will look different than aged weathered paint.
